Great show, terrible audience

Elf the musical was everything it should be - glitzy, kitsch and mega- Christmassy. It's a new take on a well-loved story which is perfect for the stage and is only really missing a singalong. It reminded me of the traditional British pantomime and I kept waiting for us ALL to be asked to "sing loud for all to hear"!

However I was disgusted to find that about half on the audience wandered in during the beginning of the show. People were drifting (noisily) in a full 20 minutes after the start, again after the interval and - worse by far - about quarter of the theatre got up & left after the finale, before the final number and curtain call. I don't know if this is just the American way, but I thought it was extremely rude. The venue could help by disallowing entry after the show has started (as they do in the UK) but I'm not sure they can do anything about that kind of rudeness at the end.

Disappointed

The sets were great and the pit did a fantastic job. The boy playing Budd's brother and the woman playing the mother stole the show at every opportunity. However, there wasn't a wow moment from Buddy the Elf. Also, there were many dead spots of silence. It was almost as if there was a pause for audience reaction leaving the audience confused. Finally, I'm at a loss about the injection of Buddy the Elf advocating for men to have boyfriends. The children in the audience immediately turned to their parents with a look of confusion and quickly resulted with numerous families walking out. This wasnt in the movie and was unnecessary.

Very underwhelming / Not Worth the Money

The tone of this production was wrong from the very outset. From a grouchy lead female character, to a boozed up, gambling Santa - the whole thing just felt wrong for a holiday play. While referential of the movie, the play takes liberties that don’t come across well and the stage sets were completely underwhelming. Many of the jokes have not aged well - including one about being ‘bipolar.’ All of the Peter Dinklage stuff was removed (largely bc the writers probably thought it wasn’t PC), yet they simultaneously have people on their knees playing the roles of the elves, rather than actual people of short stature. It seemed very tone deaf. My wife and I thought we were watching a High School production, and even that might be a generous characterization. The people sitting next to us didn’t even come back for the second act - wish we had followed their lead! Save your money, watch the movie.
